Compassion Comes Naturally When There is Understanding

One way I think of doing readings is taking the time to actually listen to and understand what is going on, free of previous judgements and ideas of right and wrong.

Often when we have experiences that are hurtful, uncomfortable, or difficult, it triggers a strong reaction within us – I hate this experience, I want it to go away, this is bad.

Often it is hard to look past these feelings and reactions. However, behind everything there is a story, a reason for its existence.

Another way to say this is that there is a reason for everything. This is not a “feel good” aphorism, but rather something I say candidly – we live in a cause and effect universe. Anything that exists has some sort of logic behind existing.

Example: We can apply this idea of cause and effect this to many different scenarios. Let’s say a child is crying, and causing distress to the parents. We can assume that there is something upsetting the child, something that they aren’t able to express with words. Through trial and error, we can find out if the child is hungry, frustrated, or needs to sleep. Ultimately the crying exists as a way to express some deeper frustration that needs to be addressed.

What about when you feel frustrated? Frustration doesn’t come out of nowhere, but rather we can take the time to listen to ourselves, and see why the frustration is coming up. Does something need to be addressed? Does something need to be noticed or understood?

From a broader perspective, outside of our emotions, we can look at other situations in our life where me might want to apply these ideas. If we feel stuck in career, relationships, or personal goals, we can take the time to listen and understand why this might be happening, and then address them in the most effective way.

Example: Imagine someone is in a relationship where the partner becomes neglectful and withdrawn. This might cause deeply uncomfortable feelings for the partner being neglected, but if we truly took the time to understand why the neglectful partner is acting this way, it may come from a place of self-preservation, fear, or deep insecurity. There may be many reasons they feels this way, but ultimately, with this understanding, it completely changes the way we view their actions and can lead us to feel some compassion where before there may have been only blame.

Once we understand why something is happening, blame dissipates. Things simply exist. We either develop a neutral understanding of the situation, or we may develop compassion for what we once misunderstood.

Returning to my very first statement that readings serve as way to understand what is really going on – I believe that intuitive readings can offer a perspective that not just inspires understanding, but also, as a result: compassion, emotional alignment, and informed action. True understanding is the solid ground upon which we can place our emotions and motivations.
